What is a dynamic QR code, and how to change one after printing

A dynamic QR code points at a short link you control, so you can change where it goes after it is printed. Here is how they work, and how to make one.

A dynamic QR code is a QR code that points at a short link you control, instead of encoding the destination directly. Because the code holds the link and not the destination, you can change where it goes at any time, even after the code is printed on a menu, a package, or a sign. The printed code never changes; only the page it opens does.

That one difference is the whole reason dynamic codes exist, and it is the difference between a code you can fix and a code you have to reprint.

Dynamic vs static QR codes

A static QR code encodes the destination inside the pattern itself. When someone scans it, their phone reads the URL straight off the code. That is simple and free, and it works forever, but it also means the destination is locked the moment you print it. Change your mind, and the only fix is to generate a new code and reprint everything.

A dynamic QR code encodes a short link (like scanburst.com/q/abc123) that you own. The scan hits that link, and the link forwards to wherever you have pointed it today. Point it somewhere else tomorrow and every printed copy of the code follows, instantly, with no reprint.

Rule of thumb: if the code links to something that will never change, like a WiFi password sticker, a static code is fine and free. If it links to anything that might change, or you want to know how many people scanned it, you want a dynamic code.

How to change a QR code after it is printed

You cannot edit the pattern on a printed code, and you do not need to. With a dynamic code, the pattern stays the same and you edit the destination in your dashboard:

  1. Open the code in your Scanburst dashboard.
  2. Change the destination URL to the new page.
  3. Save. The next person who scans the printed code lands on the new page.

There is no reprint, no new sticker, no version 2 of the flyer. The menu on the table keeps working; it just opens the new menu.

This is the reason restaurants, retailers and event organizers use dynamic codes. A cafe prints one code on every table, then swaps the spring menu for the summer menu without touching a single table tent. A product ships with a code that points at a setup guide today and a promotion next month.

What you can track

Because every scan passes through your short link, a dynamic code can also measure what a static code cannot:

  • How many scans, over time, so you can see whether a campaign is working.
  • Where, by country and city, from the network (never GPS).
  • What device, so you know if your audience is on iPhone or Android.

Good tools count real people and exclude preview bots and link scanners, so the numbers reflect actual scans. They also never store a raw IP address; a one-way hash is enough to tell a repeat scan from a new one.

What else a dynamic code can do

Once the destination is a link you control, a few things become possible that a static code simply cannot do:

  • Send different people to different places. Route iPhone users to the App Store and Android users to Google Play, from one printed code.
  • A/B test. Split scans between two landing pages and keep the one that converts.
  • Schedule and expire. Make a code go live on a launch date, or stop working after an event.
  • Password-protect. Put a gate in front of the destination.
